What you'll learn in this wine tasting class:
This mountainous AVA bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Silicon Valley in Santa Clara on the east boasts some of the finest wines in California. The first person to recognize this excellent terroir was Martin Ray who passed away in 1976. Ray’s passion was Burgundian styled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the 1940s Ray established himself as the pioneer of the region with his high-altitude winery overlooking the Santa Clara Valley. Others followed including Ridge, Mount Eden, Kathryn Kennedy, Bonny Doon, and David Bruce.
The mountains and the influence of the ocean create multiple climates that can add diversity to the wines. The Ridge vineyards overlook Palo Alto on the eastern side of the AVA. This is vastly different from the vineyards carved out of the Red Wood Forest just a few miles inland from the town of Santa Cruz on the coast.
If you are a lover of classic California wines, you will find an abundance of riches in the best wines of Santa Cruz Mountains. We hope you can join us for this fascinating exploration of the terroirs of Santa Cruz Mountains.
